BODIPY derivatives and methods and synthesis thereof
Patent Number: US20150158888

Executive Summary:
  • Invention Type: Therapeutic
  • Patent Status: Application
  • Patent Link: https://www.google.com/patents/US20150158888
  • Research Institute: University of Oklahoma
  • Disease Focus: Colon cancer
  • Basis of Invention: Chemical synthesis of boron dipyrromethene difluoride (BODIPY)
  • How it works: Photodynamic therapy requires the use of a source of excitation and a photosensitizer to be activated by the light source to kill cancerous cells. In general, higher wavelengths (600 to 900 nm) are desirable, because of higher tissue penetration. BODIPY is an example of a photosensitizer, but thus far none absorb beyond 700 nm and the synthesis has been complicated. The current invention describes a BODIPY derivative with near infrared light absorption
  • Lead Challenge Inventor: Youngjae You
  • Inventors: Youngjae You, Samuel Awuah, Ryan Watley
  • Development Stage: Pre-clinical
  • Novelty:
    • Novel photosensitizer with near infrared absorption spectrum
  • Clinical Applications:
    • Photodynamic therapy

General Description:

Photodynamic therapy is an emerging tool for treating cancer because of targeted treatment and minimal side effects. A photo-activatable compound is administered to the patient and activated by a light source. The current invention describes a novel molecule that has enhanced tissue penetration and high selectivity for the treatment colon cancer.

Strengths:
  • Increased tissue penetration
  • Non-invasive

Weaknesses:
  • Use of NIR light
